"The hotel Albergo Annunziata is located in Piazzetta Repubblica, 5, in front of a pleasant garden in a location, which is both quiet and central. The situation now is very different then during past centuries, until less than a hundred years ago. The area, which is now the little square, was occupied by an imposing building, the Beccheria Grande, constructed by Duke Alfonso I DEste in 1506-1507. The construction, wrongly named as Artiglierie or Grande Fonderia Estense, shortly became the Pescheria Nuova. All around the area were little commercial activities, mostly small shops with several inns and taverns. On the left hand side of the Slaughter Houses main entrance and in front of the church Chiesa di San Giuliano there was an overpass called Annunziata from where started a very small alley. In the archival files regarding the Urban Streets it is stated that the alleys width was just 3.50m, and was named Vicolo delle Pecore, which connected Piazza dei Pollajoli with Via della Luna. At the end of 1700 the existing building, situated right at the beginning of Vicolo delle Pecore number 1673, close to the overpass, was home of the Locanda Annunziata. It is not possible to know which element influenced the name of the other. It is very likely that the name derived from either being in front of the low relief of Archangel Gabriel and the Vergine Annunciata, represented on the façade of the little church of S. Giuliano
or perhaps its closeness to the frescoe representing the Virgin Mary with Saint Joseph and Saint Elizabeth. Due to the existence of five small shops overhanging the alley, making the passage even more narrow and difficult, and to the decrepitude and abandonment from which the slaughter house was by now suffering, the Town Council decided to pull down the building and so the archway of the Annunciata was destroyed. For those interested in curiosities, Giacomo Casanova was a guest at Annunziata two centuries ago and today our guest book, which everybody may consult in the hall, is enriched with names of famous painters, musicians, conductors, journalists and personalities in the field of culture."
